Bats Show Up In Sledgehammers 9-8 Win Against Suffolk Suns

There were runs aplenty on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746, as Sledgehammers outshone Suffolk Suns 9-8. Sledgehammers collected 11 hits, while Suffolk Suns had 14.


Sledgehammers built a 7-run lead in the third inning and then held off Suffolk Suns's charge. Suffolk Suns closed the gap by scoring on an error, a double, a home run, a double, and an error.


Sledgehammers got on the board in the top of the second inning after Moises Alou homered to center field, and Bret Boone doubled to center field, each scoring one run.


Andres Gallaraga hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the second for the Suffolk Suns.


Sledgehammers scored six runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Alou tripled, scoring one run, Juan Gonzalez homered to left field, scoring two runs, and Brad Ausmus homered to left field, scoring three runs.


Kevin Brown stepped on the bump first for Sledgehammers. The starter surrendered eight hits and two runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one. Kerry Wood started on the bump for Suffolk Suns. The pitcher allowed 11 hits and nine runs over nine innings, striking out 13 and walking six. Rick Aguilera, Troy Percival, and John Wetteland each appeared in relief for Sledgehammers.


Sledgehammers accumulated 11 hits in the game. Ausmus, the number nine hitter for Sledgehammers, led the way with three runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-4 on the day. Jeff Bagwell led Sledgehammers with three hits in five at bats. Gonzalez and Alou each collected multiple hits for Sledgehammers. Barry Larkin led Sledgehammers with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, tallying six walks for the game.


Suffolk Suns piled up 14 hits in the game. Charles Johnson, Ray Durham, Gallaraga, Jim Edmonds, and Mike Benjamin each collected two hits for Suffolk Suns. Jose Canseco and Mike Benjamin each drove in two runs for Suffolk Suns. Suffolk Suns didn't commit a single error in the field. Johnson had the most chances in the field with 12.
