Ray Lankford collected three hits in five at bats, as Massapequa Mafia defeated Sledgehammers 9-6 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Lankford hit a home run to left field in the second inning, singled in the sixth inning, and doubled in the eighth inning.
Sledgehammers were the first to get on the board in the first when Barry Larkin hit a solo home run to left field.
Dante Bichette singled to right field, which helped Massapequa Mafia tie the game at one in the bottom of the first.
A home run to left field by Lankford gave Massapequa Mafia the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the second.
Sledgehammers took the lead, 4-3, in the top of the fifth thanks to singles by Juan Gonzalez, and Tony Batista.
Massapequa Mafia flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on six hits to take the lead, 9-4. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Mo Vaughn that drove in two.
Andy Pettitte led things off on the mound for Massapequa Mafia. The hurler surrendered five hits and four runs over five innings, striking out four and walking six. Kevin Brown began the game for Sledgehammers. The starting pitcher surrendered 13 hits and nine runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking one. Dan Miceli threw two innings of shutout ball for Massapequa Mafia in relief. The reliever gave up two hits, striking out three and walking none.
Massapequa Mafia tallied 14 hits in the game. Sammy Sosa, Jay Bell, and Vaughn each collected multiple hits for Massapequa Mafia. Massapequa Mafia turned one double play in the game.
Sledgehammers amassed nine hits in the game. Larkin led Sledgehammers with three hits in four at bats from the leadoff position. Moises Alou paced Sledgehammers with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, tallying seven walks for the game.
