Edgar Martinez collected three hits in four at bats, as Scorpions defeated Yesterday’s Knights 9-6 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Martinez singled in the second inning, doubled in the fourth inning, and singled in the seventh inning.
Scorpions jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the second inning after Jose Offerman singled, scoring one run, Jeff Cirillo singled, scoring one run, Martinez singled, scoring two runs, Todd Helton singled, scoring one run, and Paul O’Neill hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.
Two more Scorpions runs crossed the plate in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 9-4. Jorge Posada hit a solo home run to center field, and Martinez singled, scoring one run.
Randy Johnson opened the game for Scorpions. The southpaw surrendered six hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out four and walking four. John Smoltz led things off on the bump for Yesterday’s Knights. The starting pitcher surrendered 12 hits and nine runs over seven innings, striking out 11 and walking five. Tom Gordon pitched one and one-third innings of scoreless ball for Scorpions in relief. The reliever surrendered zero hits, striking out one and walking none.
Scorpions accumulated 13 hits in the game. Helton and Martinez were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected three hits for Scorpions while hitting back-to-back. Cirillo and O’Neill each collected multiple hits for Scorpions. Posada paced Scorpions with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up six walks for the game. Offerman stole two bases. Scorpions turned two double plays in the game. Scorpions were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Helton had the most chances in the field with eight.
Yesterday’s Knights amassed nine hits in the game. Alex Rodriguez drove the middle of the lineup, leading Yesterday’s Knights with two runs batted in. The shortstop went 1-for-3 on the day. Larry Walker and Richard Hidalgo each collected two hits for Yesterday’s Knights.
