The League-leading Disco Turkeys of the Strat Pack have made a key roster move in the wake of catcher Eddie Perez's injury, signing versatile backstop Eli Marrero. The decision comes as the Turkeys look to maintain their early-season momentum and bolster their lineup while Perez recuperates.
Marrero, 24, brings a combination of experience and versatility. In 1998 with the St. Louis Cardinals, he played in 83 games, stepping up to the plate 284 times. Marrero batted .244 with 62 hits, including 18 doubles, one triple, and four home runs. While not a power hitter, his ability to drive the ball and provide timely offense makes him a strong candidate to help the Turkeys during this critical stretch. His defensive skills behind the plate and ability to play multiple positions will also add depth to the team.
The signing is timely, as Perez has been instrumental in the Turkeys' early success. Through just five games, Perez has been red-hot, going 4-for-9 with all four hits for extra bases. His team-leading five RBIs have set the tone for the lineup, making his absence a significant challenge. Marrero will have big shoes to fill, and while replicating Perez’s production may be a tall order, Marrero’s track record suggests he can contribute meaningfully.
"We’re excited to bring Eli into the fold,” said Disco Turkeys manager Rich O' Conner. “He’s a proven competitor with valuable experience. Eddie’s been a key part of our early success, but we’re confident Eli can step in and help us keep things rolling.”
The Disco Turkeys, who have surprised the league with their strong start, will need contributions from across the roster to maintain their position at the top. Marrero’s signing not only addresses the immediate need at catcher but also adds a layer of insurance as the season progresses.
With Perez’s status being monitored closely, Turkeys fans will now turn their attention to Marrero, hopeful that his bat and defensive prowess can keep the lineup steady and the wins piling up.
