For Whom the Bell Tolls: Jay Bell Proves a Tough Out as Massapequa Mafia Topple Sledgehammers 5-3




Jay Bell collected three hits in four at bats, as Massapequa Mafia defeated Sledgehammers 5-3 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Bell hit a solo home run to center field in the eighth inning, doubled in the sixth inning, and singled in the second inning.


A single by Frank Thomas put Massapequa Mafia on the board in the bottom of the second.


Jeff Kent homered to right field, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third for the Massapequa Mafia.


Massapequa Mafia scored one run in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run to center field by Bell.


Sledgehammers scored one run in the top of the ninth on a solo home run to center field by Albert Belle.


Andy Pettitte earned the win for Massapequa Mafia. The starter gave up nine hits and two runs over six innings, striking out three and walking four. Mike Mussina took the loss for Sledgehammers. The starter went seven and one-third innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits, striking out 11 and walking four. Mike Jackson collected the save. Kerry Litenberg pitched one and one-third innings of scoreless ball for Massapequa Mafia in relief. The hurler gave up one hit, striking out four and walking none.


Massapequa Mafia tallied 11 hits in the game. Kent led Massapequa Mafia with three runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The infielder went 1-for-3 on the day. Sammy Sosa and Thomas each collected multiple hits for Massapequa Mafia. Massapequa Mafia turned one double play in the game. Massapequa Mafia were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Scott Hatteberg had the most chances in the field with nine.


Sledgehammers amassed 11 hits in the game. Belle went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Sledgehammers in hits. Barry Larkin collected two hits for Sledgehammers in five at bats. Sledgehammers turned one double play in the game. Sledgehammers didn't commit a single error in the field. Dan Wilson had the most chances in the field with nine.
