Jeff Bagwell Helps Sledgehammers Slug Their Way To Victory Against Massapequa Mafia 8-6




Jeff Bagwell hit two home runs and drove in three as Sledgehammers defeated Massapequa Mafia 8-6 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Bagwell homered in the first and eighth innings.


Despite falling down by five runs in the eighth inning, Massapequa Mafia tried to fight back. Massapequa Mafia closed the gap by scoring on a home run and a double.


Sledgehammers opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two home runs. Sledgehammers first got on the board when Bagwell homered to center field, scoring two runs.


Sledgehammers scored one run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to center field by Juan Gonzalez.


Jeff Kent homered to center field, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth for the Massapequa Mafia.


Sledgehammers scored two runs in the top of the sixth on a home run to center field by Brad Ausmus.


Bagwell hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the eighth for the Sledgehammers.


Kevin Brown started on the mound for Sledgehammers. The pitcher allowed 14 hits and six runs over eight and two-thirds innings, striking out nine and walking three. Pedro Martinez stepped on the mound first for Massapequa Mafia. The pitcher allowed 10 hits and seven runs over seven innings, striking out 10 and walking three. John Wetteland appeared in relief for Sledgehammers.


Sledgehammers accumulated 11 hits in the game. Gonzalez, Bagwell, and Ausmus each collected two hits for Sledgehammers. Sledgehammers turned two double plays in the game. Sledgehammers were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Ausmus made the most plays with 13.


Massapequa Mafia piled up 14 hits in the game. Mo Vaughn, Frank Thomas, Jay Bell, Dante Bichette, and Carl Everett each collected two hits for Massapequa Mafia. Thomas and Kent each drove in two runs for Massapequa Mafia. Martinez threw an immaculate inning in the third, striking out the side on nine pitches.
