John Olerud hit two home runs and drove in three as Yesterday’s Knights defeated Suffolk Suns 13-6 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Olerud homered in the eighth and seventh innings.
Suffolk Suns were the first to get on the board in the first when Carlos Delgado homered to center field, scoring three runs.
Yesterday’s Knights made the score 4-3 in the bottom of the first after Ellis Burks singled, scoring one run, and Richard Hidalgo doubled, scoring three runs.
Yesterday’s Knights added to their lead with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to home runs by Olerud, Larry Walker, and Hidalgo.
Barry Bonds hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the eighth for the Suffolk Suns.
Four more Yesterday’s Knights runs crossed the plate in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 13-4. Derek Jeter doubled, scoring one run, Olerud homered to right field, scoring two runs, and Jason Kendall hit a solo home run to center field.
Kenny Rogers earned the win for Yesterday’s Knights. The pitcher surrendered three hits and three runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking six. Scott Elarton took the loss for Suffolk Suns. The hurler went one and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs on six hits, striking out two and walking four. Francisco Cordova began the game for Suffolk Suns. The starting pitcher gave up eight hits and six runs over six and one-third innings, striking out three and walking two. Mike Williams and Gil Heredia each appeared in relief for Yesterday’s Knights.
Yesterday’s Knights tallied 14 hits in the game. Hidalgo, the number seven hitter for Yesterday’s Knights, led the way with six runs batted in. The center fielder went 2-for-4 on the day. Walker, Fernando Vina, and Kendall each collected multiple hits for Yesterday’s Knights. Gary Sheffield paced Yesterday’s Knights with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, tallying six walks for the game. Yesterday’s Knights turned three double plays in the game.
Delgado provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Suffolk Suns with five runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-5 on the day. Ray Durham and Delgado each collected two hits for Suffolk Suns. Bonds led Suffolk Suns with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, tallying eight walks for the game. Suffolk Suns were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Andres Gallaraga made the most plays with seven.
