Both teams were strong on the mound on Tuesday, but Massapequa Mafia defeated Yesterday’s Knights 2-1. Pedro Martinez started the game for Massapequa Mafia and recorded 21 outs.
Massapequa Mafia got on the board in the first inning after Mo Vaughn tripled, scoring one run.
Massapequa Mafia committed an error, which helped Yesterday’s Knights tie the game at one in the bottom of the first.
Massapequa Mafia took the lead in the top of the fourth. Sammy Sosa hit a solo home run to left field, to give Massapequa Mafia the edge, 2-1.
Martinez started on the bump for Massapequa Mafia. The hurler gave up four hits and one run (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out six and walking none. John Smoltz opened the game for Yesterday’s Knights. The right-handed pitcher surrendered four hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out 11 and walking one. Mike Jackson pitched one and two-thirds innings of shutout ball for Massapequa Mafia in relief. The hurler gave up one hit, striking out three and walking none.
Sosa and Vaughn were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for Massapequa Mafia. Vaughn and Carl Everett each collected two hits for Massapequa Mafia.
Fernando Vina, Gary Sheffield, Jason Giambi, Ellis Burks, and John Olerud each collected one hit for Yesterday’s Knights. Yesterday’s Knights were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Jason Kendall made the most plays with 15.
