Massapequa Mafia were victorious against Sledgehammers 6-4 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746.
Massapequa Mafia got on the board in the top of the first inning after Carl Everett hit a solo home run to center field, Sammy Sosa doubled, scoring one run, and an error scored two runs.
Massapequa Mafia scored one run in the top of the eighth on a solo home run to center field by Sosa.
Juan Gonzalez hit a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the eighth for the Sledgehammers.
Tom Glavine earned the win for Massapequa Mafia. The hurler allowed six hits and three runs over six innings, striking out three and walking two. Curt Schilling took the loss for Sledgehammers. The starter went eight innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out 13 and walking one. Jeff Shaw collected the save. Kerry Litenberg tossed one inning of scoreless ball for Massapequa Mafia in relief. The reliever gave up zero hits, striking out none and walking two.
Sosa provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Massapequa Mafia with two runs batted in. The right fielder went 2-for-5 on the day. Sosa and Scott Hatteberg each collected two hits for Massapequa Mafia.
Sledgehammers accumulated nine hits in the game. Robin Ventura led Sledgehammers with two runs batted in from the number seven spot in the lineup. The left-handed hitter went 2-for-4 on the day. Gonzalez led Sledgehammers with three hits in four at bats. Moises Alou collected two hits for Sledgehammers in four at bats. Barry Larkin paced Sledgehammers with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, amassing six walks for the game.
