Massapequa Mafia beat Suffolk Suns 6-4 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746.
A home run to left field by Sammy Sosa put Massapequa Mafia on the board in the top of the first.
Massapequa Mafia added one run in the third after Sosa hit a sacrifice fly.
Suffolk Suns took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Ray Durham homered to left field, scoring two runs, to give Suffolk Suns the leg up, 4-3.
Ray Lankford homered to center field, which helped Massapequa Mafia tie the game at four in the top of the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, Massapequa Mafia broke up the tie when Mo Vaughn hit a solo home run to left field. Then a walk by Lankford followed to extend the lead to 6-4.
Tom Glavine began the game for Massapequa Mafia. The starter gave up nine hits and four runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking one. Kerry Wood opened the game for Suffolk Suns. The starting pitcher allowed five hits and four runs over eight innings, striking out 12 and walking one. Kerry Litenberg and T.J Matthews each threw scoreless innings for Massapequa Mafia in relief.
Sosa provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Massapequa Mafia with three runs batted in. The number three hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Lankford, Massapequa Mafia's number nine hitter, led the team with two hits in three at-bats.
Suffolk Suns tallied nine hits in the game. Chipper Jones and Durham each collected two hits for Suffolk Suns. Durham went 2-for-5 at the plate and led the team with two runs batted in. Wood threw an immaculate inning in the sixth, striking out the side on nine pitches.
