Nomar Slump as Garciaparra Hits For Cycle To Lead Scorpions Past Massapequa Mafia

Nomar Garciaparra hit for the cycle to carry Scorpions to a 10-2 victory over Massapequa Mafia on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Garciaparra hit a home run to center field in the seventh inning, tripled in the second inning, singled in the third inning, and doubled in the ninth inning.
Randy Johnson struck out 14 batters on the day. The left-handed pitcher also allowed nine hits and two runs over nine innings while walking none.
Scorpions opened the scoring in the top of the third thanks to two singles. Scorpions first got on the board when Dave Berg singled, scoring one run.
Scorpions scored two runs in the top of the fourth on a home run to center field by Todd Helton.
Three more Scorpions runs crossed the plate in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 8-1. Paul O’Neill hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Garciaparra homered to center field, scoring two runs.
Pedro Martinez took the loss for Massapequa Mafia. The starter went nine innings, surrendering 10 runs (nine earned) on 16 hits, striking out 12 and walking four.
Scorpions piled up 16 hits in the game. Berg, Helton, Jose Offerman, Edgar Martinez, and Glenallen Hill each collected multiple hits for Scorpions.
Massapequa Mafia piled up 10 hits in the game. Sammy Sosa, Ray Lankford, Travis Fryman, and Dante Bichette each collected two hits for Massapequa Mafia. Fryman led Massapequa Mafia with two runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-4 on the day. Massapequa Mafia turned one double play in the game.
