Ray Lankford Leads Massapequa Mafia Past Sledgehammers




Ray Lankford collected three hits in four at bats, as Massapequa Mafia defeated Sledgehammers 4-2 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Lankford hit a solo home run to right field in the ninth inning, doubled in the third inning, and doubled in the seventh inning.


A solo home run to center field by Moises Alou put Sledgehammers on the board in the bottom of the first.


Massapequa Mafia jumped back into the lead in the top of the fifth inning after Carl Everett hit a sacrifice fly, and Mo Vaughn doubled to left field, each scoring one run.


Jeff Bagwell homered to right field, which helped Sledgehammers tie the game at two in the bottom of the sixth.


A solo home run to right field by Vaughn gave Massapequa Mafia the lead, 3-2, in the top of the eighth.


Massapequa Mafia scored one run in the top of the ninth on a solo home run to right field by Lankford.


Pedro Martinez led things off on the hill for Massapequa Mafia. The starting pitcher gave up six hits and two runs over nine innings, striking out eight and walking none. Curt Schilling stepped on the hill first for Sledgehammers. The righty surrendered seven hits and four runs (two earned) over nine innings, striking out 13 and walking three.


Vaughn drove the middle of the lineup, leading Massapequa Mafia with two runs batted in. The infielder went 2-for-5 on the day. Massapequa Mafia were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Javy Lopez made the most plays with nine.


Alou and Bagwell were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for Sledgehammers. Schilling threw an immaculate inning in the sixth, striking out the side on nine pitches.
