Scorpions defeated Suffolk Suns 1-0 on Tuesday as two pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Randy Johnson and Graeme Lloyd each pitched for Scorpions in the game. Lloyd induced a fly out from Tony Clark to get the last out.
Both teams were strong on the hill. Scorpions pitchers struck out 11, while Suffolk Suns sat down six.
Scorpions opened the scoring in the sixth after Roberto Alomar hit a solo home run to center field.
Johnson earned the win for Scorpions. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and zero runs over seven and two-thirds innings, striking out 10 and walking one. David Wells took the loss for Suffolk Suns. The hurler went nine innings, surrendering one run on eight hits, striking out six and walking none. Lloyd collected the save.
Alomar went 1-for-4 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Jeff Cirillo led Scorpions with three hits in four at bats. Glenallen Hill collected two hits for Scorpions in four at bats. Johnson threw an immaculate inning in the second, striking out the side on nine pitches. Scorpions were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Jorge Posada made the most plays with 11.
Gary DiSarcina, Barry Bonds, and Jim Edmonds each collected one hit for Suffolk Suns. Wells threw an immaculate inning in the second, striking out the side on nine pitches. Suffolk Suns turned one double play in the game.
