Sledgehammers Claim Victory Over Scorpions




Sledgehammers were victorious against Scorpions 6-3 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746.


Sledgehammers opened the scoring in the second after Ken Caminiti hit a solo home run to right field.


Scorpions made the score 3-1 in the bottom of the third after Jeff Cirillo singled, scoring two runs, and Todd Helton grounded out, scoring one run.


Sledgehammers jumped into the lead in the top of the fifth when Ken Griffey Jr homered to center field, scoring two runs, and Barry Larkin tripled, scoring one run.


Albert Belle homered to center field, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth for the Sledgehammers.


Mike Mussina stepped on the mound first for Sledgehammers. The hurler surrendered two hits and three runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out five and walking three. Ramon Martinez opened the game for Scorpions. The hurler surrendered seven hits and four runs over six innings, striking out three and walking three. John Wetteland tossed two innings of zero-run ball for Sledgehammers in relief. The reliever surrendered one hit, striking out two and walking one.


Griffey Jr and Belle were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Sledgehammers. Larkin led Sledgehammers with two hits in four at bats from the leadoff position.


Cirillo provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Scorpions with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-4 on the day. Cirillo, Nomar Garciaparra, and Otis Nixon each collected one hit for Scorpions. Scorpions turned three double plays in the game. Scorpions were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Helton made the most plays with 10.
