Kevin Brown was dominant on the hill, as the hurler rang up 13 strikeouts in Sledgehammers's 6-1 victory over Scorpions on Friday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Brown gave up eight hits and one run over nine innings while walking two.
Sledgehammers were the first to get on the board in the third when Jeff Bagwell doubled, scoring one run.
Jeff Cirillo singled to center field, which helped Scorpions tie the game at one in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sledgehammers broke up the tie when Bagwell singled, scoring one run. Then a play followed to extend the lead to 3-1.
Randy Johnson stepped on the mound first for Scorpions. The starting pitcher surrendered seven hits and five runs over seven and one-third innings, striking out eight and walking five.
Bagwell and Barry Larkin were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Sledgehammers. Larkin paced Sledgehammers with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, accumulating six walks for the game. Sledgehammers turned two double plays in the game. Sledgehammers didn't commit a single error in the field. Dan Wilson had the most chances in the field with 11.
Cirillo led Scorpions with one run batted in. The infielder went 1-for-3 on the day. Glenallen Hill and Jorge Posada each collected two hits for Scorpions. Scorpions were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Posada made the most plays with 12.
