Sledgehammers Defeats Suffolk Suns On Back Of Clutch Display From Ken Griffey Jr

Ken Griffey Jr drove in four runs on two hits to lead Sledgehammers past Suffolk Suns 7-5 on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746. Griffey Jr doubled in the first inning, scoring two runs, and hit a home run to center field in the seventh inning, scoring two.

Sledgehammers were the first to get on the board in the first when Griffey Jr doubled, scoring two runs.

Sledgehammers added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Barry Larkin singled to right field, and Jeff Bagwell hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Suffolk Suns tied the game in the bottom of the second thanks to an error, a sacrifice fly by Ray Durham, a double by Barry Bonds, and a single by Chipper Jones.

In the top of the seventh, Sledgehammers broke up the tie when Griffey Jr homered to center field, scoring two runs. Then a solo home run to left field by Ken Caminiti followed to extend the lead to 7-4.

Curt Schilling opened the game for Sledgehammers. The right-handed pitcher surrendered nine hits and five runs (two earned) over eight innings, striking out 10 and walking two. Andy Ashby stepped on the mound first for Suffolk Suns. The starting pitcher gave up 12 hits and seven runs (five earned) over seven innings, striking out three and walking three. John Wetteland pitched one inning of zero-run ball for Sledgehammers in relief. The right-handed pitcher surrendered one hit, striking out two and walking none.

Sledgehammers amassed 12 hits in the game. Brad Ausmus, Bret Boone, Griffey Jr, and Albert Belle each collected two hits for Sledgehammers. Sledgehammers turned one double play in the game.

Suffolk Suns amassed 10 hits in the game. Jones went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Suffolk Suns in hits. Bonds, Jones, Durham, and Carlos Delgado each drove in one run for Suffolk Suns. Jim Edmonds and Darryl Hamilton each collected multiple hits for Suffolk Suns.
