Sledgehammers Storm Back To Defeat Suffolk Suns 7-4 and Sweep Series

Sledgehammers trailed by as many as four, but came back to top Suffolk Suns on Tuesday at 5100 Long Island Expy, Dix Hills, NY 11746, 7-4.


Suffolk Suns got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Ray Durham scored after tagging up, and Derek Bell singled to right field, each scoring one run.


Suffolk Suns extended their early lead with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to RBI singles by Jim Edmonds and Mike Benjamin.


Sledgehammers scored one run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to right field by Ken Caminiti.


Sledgehammers tied the game in the top of the sixth thanks to a double by Albert Belle, and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Abreu.


In the top of the tenth, Sledgehammers broke up the tie when Moises Alou doubled, scoring one run. Then a single by David Segui followed to extend the lead to 7-4.


Mike Mussina opened the game for Sledgehammers. The hurler gave up 10 hits and four runs over eight innings, striking out seven and walking one. Scott Elarton began the game for Suffolk Suns. The starting pitcher allowed six hits and four runs over eight innings, striking out seven and walking one. John Wetteland threw one and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball for Sledgehammers in relief. The hurler surrendered zero hits, striking out two and walking one.


Alou and Belle were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Sledgehammers while hitting back-to-back. Segui and Belle each drove in two runs for Sledgehammers. Sledgehammers turned one double play in the game. Sledgehammers were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Brad Ausmus had the most chances in the field with nine.


Suffolk Suns collected 10 hits in the game. Edmonds went 2-for-5 at the plate to lead Suffolk Suns in hits. Tony Clark, Bell, Edmonds, and Mike Benjamin each drove in one run for Suffolk Suns. Suffolk Suns turned one double play in the game. Suffolk Suns were sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Durham made the most plays with nine.


Sledgehammers will travel to Yesterdays Knights for their next game on Tuesday.
